Zijn eigenlijke woorden waren: “When I shall have perceived all the coordinates, I ought also to have determined their center. I ought then to have passed beyond all accidents of time and space. If anything at all will lead me to myself, a digression round the world will do so.”

Vertaald: Als ik alle plaatsen heb ervaren, dan heb hun wezen gevonden. Dan ben ik ook langs alle gebeurtenissen in tijd en ruimte geweest. Als er al iest is wat mij bij mijzelf brengt, dan is dat een reis rond de wereld.
